Officers found the driver unresponsive, and, following field sobriety testing, charged him with driving while impaired by drugs, along with other vehicle violations. Gladstone’s Military Service in World Wars: William Cornelius Gladstone, originally from Norwalk, Connecticut, was a longstanding resident of Rye, New York, and a dedicated servicemember in both World War I and World War II. He enlisted with the Army Signal Corps as a telegraph operator at age 21 and later served on the Mexican border. Rising to the rank of captain during World War I, Gladstone continued his involvement postwar as a civilian aide and re-enlisted in 1942.
